Daisy Ridley has admitted that she does not believe her Star Wars’ character’s fixation on her parents was a ‘weakness’, suggesting that her desire for the truth led her on ‘this amazing journey’.

In The Last Jedi fans discovered that Rey’s parents were junk traders who sold her for drinking money, dashing conspiracies that she may have been Luke Skywalker’s daughter.

But now Daisy has discussed how the discovery of her parenthood is beneficial for Rey, telling fans that ‘even though [Rey is] very hopeful about moving forward, there’s clearly some stuff that she needs to put to bed and that is all going to help her, moving forward’.

When asked if Rey’s determination to find her parents was a flaw, she said: ‘I don’t think that’s a weakness. I think it’s a wonderful… again, sort of adds to the brilliant hopefulness that, what may have happened wasn’t so bad. Like, that she wasn’t just left there by these awful people. And, also, it leads her on this amazing journey.

‘That’s part of the whole thing. She wouldn’t have gone. I think she wouldn’t have stayed if she didn’t really want that. She wouldn’t have had the moment with Luke and all of the other amazing stuff that happened.’

Of course, Rey was told her parentage by Kylo Ren in a fit of rage, so there’s still a chance her parentage could in fact be closer to the Skywalker saga than we know, with Kylo lying to Rey to get her to move to the Dark Side.

And this theory that would help many fans to reconcile just why Rey is so central to this journey.

It wouldn’t exactly be out of character for a practitioner of The Dark Side to lie, and many characters have been wrong before – Qui-Gon Jinn was wrong about Anakin.

Han was let down by Lando.

Leia kissed her brother.

Still, as previousy posited, it would be a simple solution, but an unsatisfying one

Akin to Darth Vader saying ‘I am your father’ in Empire, then coming back in Return of The Jedi and saying ‘not really’.

No, Rey is taking this path for a reason, and she is connected to Ben for a reason. What if that reason is that Ben is part of Rey’s destiny? That, even though she may not be a Skywalker, she is The One who will bring balance to The Force?

We’ll find out when Rey returns to screens with Episode 9 in December 2019.
