The trailer for Annapurna Pictures’ Sorry To Bother You has just dropped and pundits are already predicting it as the most ridiculous and insane movie of the year.

And we have to agree – but woah boy does it look amazing.

Writer/director Boots Riley’s satire centres on Cassius Green – played by Atlanta’s Lakeith Stanfield – who lives in a garage and works as a telemarketer.

After yet another customer hangs up on him after hearing his voice and assuming he’s black, a colleague – Danny Glover, no less – tells him he’ll only get ahead if he uses his ‘white voice’.

The trailer – and thus, we presume, film – descends into a ridiculous comedy of heightened reality where he uses his ‘white voice’, which is, essentially, comedian David Cross dubbing Lakeith’s lines.

Now you can see where the insane comes into it, right?

From there his ‘white voice’ lands him a promotion to the ‘power collars’ where he has his own elevator and swanky suits and we can only assume he leaves his garage and gets a house.

Throw in Armie Hammer who plays kooky CEO Steve Lift who is a client of Cassius and his white voice skills, who accompanies all his multimillion-dollar offers with smiley faces.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January – with a screening at South By Southwest overnight – and impressed audiences abound with what has been described as Boots’ ‘pure, unfiltered ambition’, which results in a flick that throws in some crazy U-turns to keep us on our toes.

With the world still catching its breath from Jordan Peele’s Get Out that, while much more macabre, shone a light on racism and prejudice, this film tackles those same issues as well as misogyny, community, assimilation and gentrification all wrapped up in a satirical bow.

Meanwhile, a feminism play comes into it – if there weren’t already enough conversations flowing – through Cassius’ girlfriend Detroit (played by Tessa Thompson), a performance artist and roadside sign holder whose actually part of a band that protests company Worry Free – which brings the conversation of slavery into the mix via the notion of a life-long contract that provides free housing – that are seemingly prison-like, we should add – and meals and a manufacturing job.

Of which Hammer is the loony, sarong-wearing, coke-snorting CEO.

See where the reality descends into Idiocracy at times?

The film also stars Terry Crews, which, alongside Glover and Hammer, gives it some Hollywood punch alongside Lakeith and Thompson.
