A remake of West Side Story may have us skeptical but these new on-set shots on Steven Spielberg directing the Jets dancing may have eased some of our fears.
Actor Mike Faist, who plays Riff, the leader of the white American gang the Jets, can be seen dancing with his crew, which includes Ezra Menas as Anybodys, Ben Cook as Mouthpiece, Sean Harrison Jones as Action, and Patrick Higgins as Baby John, while Steven, in a bright green Hawaiian shirt, looks overjoyed at the takes.
The cast and crew are currently filming in Manhattans Harlem neighbourhood; the film is set in 1950s Lincol Square which was at the time an ethnic, blue-collar neighborhood
It was later cleared as part of regeneration and became a cultural hub with many of the former residents moving to Harlem.
The film stars Rachel Zegler in the iconic role of Maria – a Puerto-Rican woman whose brother is the leader of the Sharks – who falls in love with Tony (played by The Fault In Our Stars actor Ansel Elgort), a one-time member of the Jets and best friends with Riff.
Based on the classic Romeo And Juliet story, Spielbergs film is a remake of the 1961 musical drama film which starred Natalie Wood and Richard Beymar.
The 1961 film won ten Oscars including Best Picture; it remains the record holder for the most wins for a musical and remains iconic for its dance style which feature sharp dynamics including rapid gestures exaggerated extensions.
Spielberg has cast a number of unknowns in the major roles, with 20th Century Fox releasing an official first look image of actress Ariana DeBose in the role of Anita.
Anita is the girlfriend of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks, and also sings the famous song America.
DeBose first rose to fame as a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance, while Zegler will make her big screen debut as Maria after applying for the role after seeing a casting call on Twitter.
