The highest-grossing films of 2017 all had lead characters who were women.

In a year that saw allegations of sexual harassment and abuse in Hollywood dominate the headlines, women were killing it at the box office in North America, according to The Guardian.

The top three films, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Beauty And The Beast and Wonder Woman were all fronted by women.

Daisy Ridley played Rey in Star Wars Episode VIII, Emma Watson starred as Belle in the Disney live action movie and Gal Gadot kicked butt in Wonder Women, the most critically-acclaimed DC Universe movie to date.

Also in the top five films of 2017 are Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 and Marvel offering Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The top 5 highest-grossing films in North America in 2017

Star Wars: The Last Jedi: $533.1m (£394m)

Beauty and the Beast: $504m (£372m)

Wonder Woman: $412.6m (£304m)

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: $389.8m (£287m)

Spider-Man: Homecoming: $334.2m (£247m)

The news comes in the wake of the news that The Last Jedi is set to rake in $1billion after it eclipsed Beauty And The Beast as the top-grossing release of 2017 globally.

Meanwhile Wonder Woman has been given a sequel, with director Patty Jenkins returning to the hot seat, which is understandable, seeing as it’s the biggest live-action release directed by a women ever.
